Sleep Dentistry: All You Need to Know

Posted by PREMIER DENTAL GROUP HI on Nov 2 2021, 07:47 AM

If the very thought of visiting a dental office fills you with fear, you are not alone. Many people feel anxious about sitting in the dental chair, even for routine procedures. Sedation dentistry can be of immense help to such patients. It is safe and commonly used to make patients feel comfortable and makes their dental procedures as easy as possible.

At Premier Dental Group HI, we offer sedation dentistry as an option to our patients to ensure they avail the necessary dental treatments in a calm and relaxed way.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is a helpful medical procedure where we administer different sedative levels to help our patients relax. They are usually sedated before a dental procedure or surgery to relieve pain and anxiety. Before sedating you, we will assess your medical background and determine your fitness to avoid health complications. This technique is appropriate for patients who experience moderate to severe dental anxiety. It’s also beneficial for patients with special medical needs such as sound and light sensitivity.

What Are the Different Levels of Sedation?

There are four different levels of sedation, depending on your needs. They are:

  • Minimal Sedation:The patient remains conscious but is in a more relaxed state.
  • Moderate Sedation:The patient is still conscious and relaxed, but their memory of the procedure is hazy with no sense of time.
  • Deep or Heavy Sedation: The patient falls asleep but can be easily awakened.
  • General Anesthesia:The patient is put to sleep for the duration of the procedure.

How Are Sedatives Administered?

The sedatives can be administered in three different forms:

  • Oral Sedation

A pill should be taken a couple of hours before the procedure.

  • Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous Oxide sedation is given to the patient by attaching a nose mask. The patient has to inhale the gas that works to create a happy feeling and ease their anxiety.

  • Intravenous Sedation

Intravenous sedatives are utilized for more complex cases. The effects of these sedatives last for a few hours, and you need to have someone drive you back home.

What Precautions Should Be Taken for Sedation Dentistry?

The sedatives used at our office are safe when used at the correct levels. We will first assess your eligibility for sedation dentistry. Factors like your weight and age will be considered. If we discover an issue that would complicate the use of sedatives, alternative solutions may be offered. As dental professionals, we are specially trained to use sedation safely. We will keep track of your vital signs during the procedure and be alert for any signs of irregularities.

Is Sedation Dentistry Harmless for Children?

It’s pretty standard for kids to be nervous about dentists. Fortunately, sedation used in small quantities can be used for anxious children with no side effects. We can recognize a child’s anxiety and offer different sedative options to make them comfortable during routine cleanings and exams.
