Worst Foods For Oral Health

Posted by PREMIER DENTAL GROUP HI on Aug 29 2022, 12:24 AM

The effects of sugar on teeth have been well-documented, but the damage that other foods can cause to oral health may be less well-known. Some foods, like hard candies, can cause tooth fractures or breaks. Others, like taffy or sticky candy, can get stuck in between the teeth, making it difficult to brush and floss away. Some foods can even make an existing dental issue worse.

Read on to learn more about a few foods that are bad for our oral health.

  • Sugary foods

Candies, gum, and soft drinks all contain high levels of sugar. Sugar increases your mouth’s bacteria and plaque levels, causing tooth decay and gum disease. Sugary foods and drinks can also cause tooth discoloration, which can be difficult to remove.

  • Acidic foods

Acidic foods aren’t great for your teeth. They contain acids that wear down tooth enamel and erode the minerals that fortify your teeth. Enamel is the hardest substance in the human body. However, they are susceptible to erosion when you eat acidic foods regularly. Fruit juices, vinegar, wine, and soda are examples of acidic foods. Even some foods like tomatoes, oranges, and lemons are low in pH and may cause tooth erosion. If you consume acidic foods, rinse your mouth with water afterward and brush your teeth.

  • Coffee, tea, and alcoholic beverages

Coffee and tea are two drinks that can leave stains on your teeth. Both beverages contain tannins, which mix with the plaque on your teeth, then cause stains. These stains can be difficult to remove, so it’s best to limit your intake of these beverages.

Alcoholic beverages and wine can also cause stains. This is because both drinks have pigments that seep into the enamel, causing stains. If you do consume any of these beverages, be sure to rinse your mouth thoroughly with water.

  • Sticky foods

Sticky foods like candy, granola bars, caramel, etc., can stick to your teeth and cause damage. They can also cause tooth decay and cavities.

  • Hard foods

Popcorn kernels, hard candies, and ice cubes are all foods that can chip or crack your teeth. These foods also have a lot of force and pressure on them while you chew, which can make your teeth prone to cracking. To avoid these hard and crunchy foods, try eating softer foods like applesauce, oatmeal, chicken, mashed potatoes, ice cream, and smoothies.

  • Citrus fruits

Citrus fruits, like lemons and oranges, are highly acidic. While they’re great for your overall well-being, they can cause major damage to your teeth. They can erode the enamel of your teeth, leaving your teeth vulnerable to cavities. While citrus fruits aren’t the worst foods for oral health, they shouldn’t be consumed too often.
